Review - How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (SPOILER FREE)

January 14th, 2019

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Premiere)

January 12th 2019 was the first possible date in The Netherlands to be able to watch the brand new (and last ;-;) Dragons movie. I have been waiting for this movie for over 5 years now and I have been a fan since 2010! It's been such a long journey, and I have met a lot of HTTYD fans on social media! I have watched the 2 movies countless times, and they never really get old, neither boring for me. I am sure I'll do about the same with How To Train Your Dragon 3. Even though these movies are often rated to be for 6+, I really think these movies are suitable for all ages! No matter how old you are, you are gonna enjoy them!

But after nearly 5 years of waiting, the moment had finally arrived. The third installment of How To Train Your Dragon (or how we call it in Dutch: "Hoe Tem Je Een Draak") was here! We drove all the way to Hilversum (Netherlands) to watch the movie!

My thoughts about the movie

Visual Effects
The first thing I realized once the movie had started, was how incredibly amazing the graphics were. The graphics (talking about explosions, fog, smoke, etc.) have evolved so much in 9 years! It totally blew my mind how realistically these visual effects were rendered!

The Animation
Secondly, the animation; Just... WOW! This was so good! I clearly saw that the animators had done their absolute best, to make HTTYD3 as good as it is! The fight scenes were full of action and really were so good! Movements of all characters looked better than ever! One thing I also really want to point out is that the facial expressions of the characters (especially Toothless) really seemed to have got a lot of attention! I could literally 'read' the faces of the characters, which -in my opinion- is NOT easy to do, and really helped me get a sense of how the characters were feeling in different scenario's.

I am not affraid to say that this movie might very well be the best animated movie of all time.

The Storyline
I honestly think that How To Train Your Dragon 3 has the best story of the 3. It's such a powerful story, that makes you both sad and satisfied at the same time. It's all about letting go of each other, and being independent. In my opinion, the story ended in a way it should have, and I am not ashamed to say that I have cried at least half of the movie! This movie WILL make you cry! There's no way around that, so make sure you have tissues with you :)

Thank You Dreamworks

I have loved How To Train Your Dragon since the very beginning! In ~9 years, I have watched these movies so many times that I've lost count. This movie really means a lot to me. In some ways, this movie even changed my life. How To Train Your Dragon is what got me interested into Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), and animation. My dream is to become animator at a studio like DreamWorks someday.

With that said, I want to thank EVERYONE who has helped in the making of all How To Train Your Dragon movies! You guys made 3 absolute masterpieces! Let's not forget the TV/Netflix series that I also really loved to watch!

A big shoutout to the awesome animators on Twitter who worked on How To Train Your Dragon, take for example Kevan Shorey, who always responded to all kinds of questions coming from HTTYD fans, while having the patience for not telling any spoilers!

Also, I have loads of respect for Simon Otto who created my favorite animated character "Toothless". This character specifically made me interested into 3D animation, since I was amazed by how much personality they gave this character! I also kind of see myself in this character.

Dean Deblois is the director of these 3 awesome movies! He made sure everything went as planned! And with success! They made 3 perfect movies; 3 movies of my childhood!
